June is the start of most classes (Mapua/Malayan starts in July, go figure why) and to start the school term/sem, most of the Philippine Anime and Cosplay Community gather to a good old event called Toycon or the Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention 2008.

What: The 7th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention 2008
When: June 14-15, 2008, Saturday- Sunday
Where: Megatrade Hall 2-3, SM Megamall
Mandaluyong City, Philippines
www.toyconph.com

This is the 7th Toycon (meaning the event has been persistent for 7 years now) and it looks to be the biggest ever. There was rumor a few months back that there would be no cosplay competitions on this year’s Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention but I’m glad (as well as the Anime and Cosplay Community) that those rumors turned out to be false.

Ticket pricing is at 70 - 80 Php. Toycon tickets will not be presold by the usual shops and will only be available on the event itself.

Update: Made some changes to fit the Toycon Blogging Contest

Update 2: Added links to Event Rules which you should read if you’re planning on joining the events.

So you’ve finished Crisis Core and maybe even managed to defeat Minerva with the Materia Fusion Guide. Was it all worth it? Is Crisis Core worth the purchase? To most Final Fantasy die hards, collecting this UMD is a must (probably even getting the Japanese AND the English version is on every collector’s to do list) but to the regular gamer, what does Crisis Core really give us?

A stepping stone for one, since it’s a great reason to replay the original game, watch Advent Children then play Dirge of Cerberus all over again. The next would be answer to the timeless (or maybe not so timeless) question of “Who was Zack?” But after all that, did Crisis Core really deliver? Here’s some reasons why it didn’t make my Top Games list.

A long history of successes in the games industry usually means a HUGE fanbase for the franchise. This means more people to buy games, more raves and positive (or negative) reviews and more requests(complaints) to add content, story and usually a new title under the franchise. To sate the fanbase mob, it’s common for the company take steps to take advantage of this situation and release some sort of bait to keep the fan’s interest.

While it’s true that some of these bearfruit like Starcraft II, most of these ideas end up in a pile as vaporware. Here’s my list of my most awaited games that turned to disappointments.

Mangaholix Manga Mania 2008

Summer vacation means Cosplay Convention. Sure there wasn’t one in April but May is the month for Mangaholix. Last year’s event was a great treat especially to first time cosplayers. Too bad I didn’t get to register my costume that time, didn’t make it to the cut off. I’ll try to get in the cosplay list this time.

To past attendees, since Mangaholix will no longer be held in the Music Hall of Mall of Asia, entrance will no longer be free.

Tickets will be pre-sold on ALL Ticketnet outlets OR on the event itself.

Ticket pricing is at Php 100.

What: Mangaholix Manga Mania ‘08
When: May 31, 2008, Saturday
Where: SMX Convention Center, Seashell Drive, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City Philippines

Features:

Special Guests: Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo
Live Performances by: Urbandub, Kala, Nyctinasty, Fairlight Madison and The Kagaws :Indies

Contests:

Art Arena: Ten Paces
Cosplay Collision
Art Arena: Quickdraw
Cross-fire: Anime/Manga/Gaming trivia challenge

Update: Mangaholix just upped the number of cosplay contestants to 175. However the next 75 slots will only be available to people who will register on the event itself (no pre-registration for 101-175). I think this is a fair move for everyone.

As you may have noticed, Atma Xplorer is carrying a new design. It’s a trimmed down theme derived from FTW 2.0 by Flisterz. I’m still in the process of tweaking things so bear with me if you see some bugs, missing pages, etc.

Sir Adii’s BlockMagazine theme (which I won from Blogging Mix’s contest a while back) was quite a treat for my site but lately I ran into some problems concerning comments. URLs with #comment got redirected to an empty page or at least one where the entire post and comments are blank. I’m certain that this was caused by one or more of my plugins but I couldn’t find the right one even every overwriting my theme with a clean version so I took some time off work (and while working.. bad sylv3rblade) to create a new one; SlipStream.

Iron Man: Movie Review

Iron Man, played by Robert Downy Jr and opened to theaters April 30th (May 2 on some parts of the Globe) is the Marvel-related offering from Paramount Pictures. I must say. I’m terribly impressed by the movie as a whole as well as to the minor details.

Erm.. I haven’t done a movie review in a LONG while so please bare with me as I touch only the essential stuff and don’t go in depth with the background of the story. I’m not even THAT familiar with Iron Man’s back story. On with the review
