Sony and game publishers have started to implement a security system for PSPs that block custom firmware from within the game. They do it by checking your firmware version before booting the actual game. Currently there is no work around for this (the version.txt method doesn’t work with newer games). 5.50 GEN-B and the older 5.00 M33 simply don’t work. The only way you’ll get to play these games are to upgrade to the latest official firmware.

With this kind of DRM getting rolled out, the PSP Go is starting to look very attractive.

Bad news for anyone looking for a Starcraft 2 purchase this Christmas season. After hinting that 2009 was the magical Starcraft 2 release date, Blizzard official confirmed that there won’t be a Starcraft 2 release for 2009. It’s set for the first half of 2010 but knowing Blizzard, they might as well release it on 2011, 2012 and so on…

And no, that’s not a bad thing either.

I adore all cute things. I adore K-on.

A nendroid version K-on’s outro, Don’t say lazy, simply takes my cake :D

God they’re cute.

While I’m still saving up for my Nikon D90 to replace my year old D40, Nikon unveils two new cameras on each end of it’s camera line.  D3000 for the entry-level dSLR and D300s for it’s pro-level dSLR.

My first experience with the Hold+ plugin was several months ago when I was still using my PSP as a PMP (that’s Playstation Portable as a Portable Media Player). While the 5 to 6 hours of battery life might be enough for our gaming sessions, I always end up killing my battery afterwards. The Hold+ proved useful because it extended my PSP’s battery life for quite a bit.

If you’re interested in how the Hold+ plugin saves your battery, you can read up this lengthy post that I’ve written way back when I was still gaming on a PSP Slim (I got a Phat now :D ).

If however, you’re the kind of person who’s interested in jumping headlong into the fray then here’s how you can install Hold+ 3.8 on your custom firmware enabled PSP.

The game is still Japanese (Monster Hunter Tri won’t be arriving in English anytime soon) but the video is awesome nonetheless. I saw this while checking up one of my favorite Monster Hunter forums for some guides while plowing through HR 9 (:D). Personally, if Monster Hunter Tri were out now, I’d drop what I’m currently playing (Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, yes I haven’t converted. Too many interesting download quests :D ) and start all over again :D .

The usual way of installing custom firmware is to do it via Pandora Battery and that’s where the problem begins. You have to HAVE a Pandora Battery in order to make one (which means you need 2 batteries. One that’s already a pandora battery and one that you want to convert to pandora). The easy way out of this is simply buy a Pandora battery online. If however, you have a hackable PSP (one that can install custom firmware natively), you can install custom firmware without a Pandora Battery.

Important: If you have a PSP-3000 or a PSP-2000s with TA-088v3 (and versions above it) DO NOT TRY THIS ON YOUR PSP. If you do, congratulations, you now have a PSP paperweight. This method WILL BRICK your PSP.

If you’re one of the people dissatisfied with 5.50 GEN-A and went back to 5.00 M33 then you’ll be glad to see that 5.50 GEN-B has been released, fixed some of your bug worries and added some more features.

Important: DO NOT attempt to install this on PSP-3000 / PSP-2000 TA088v3. YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PSP IF YOU DO.

If you’re having trouble installing custom firmware 5.03 GEN-A don’t fret.  You can install Custom Firmware Enabler (cfwe in shorter terms) instead.  CFWE enables the functions of the M33 custom firmware using ChickHEN.  So yes, it’s from the same team that brought us Dark Alex’s 5.00 M33 custom firmware.

Custom Firmware Enabler will allow you to run homebrew on the PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 w/TA-088v3 and lets you play your games from ISO/CSO files.
