I’m not so sure about Sony’s current naming convention when it comes to the PSP’s firmware version but hey, an update is something to be happy about right?

Firmware 4.00 added Google Search to the XMB and the option of playback speed when watching videos.  It was updated up to Firmware 4.05 which added more visualizations during music playback and little else.  In retrospect, 3.90 was more exciting because it added Skype to the PSP.  Every update after that seems too small that many people can do without.

Well, enough of the dramu, here’s what Sony has to say on the 5.00 update.

PSP (v5.00) update

In this version, you’ll notice the addition of the PlayStation Network icon on the XMB. You can now sign up for PlayStation Network, manage your account and access PlayStation Store directly from your PSP – meaning you can download games directly to your PSP while connected via Wi-Fi. Getting games, demos and trailers while on-the-go has never been easier! Check out the screen below.

The current PlayStation Store on the PC will be down in the interim as we take some time to revamp. Don’t worry, it will re-launch soon after we’ve made some tweaks. Please keep in mind, if you already have a PlayStation Network account, simply sign in on your PSP using your existing information. The same account and wallet can be used on PS3 and PSP. You will be able to check out the PlayStation Store on the PSP soon, as we’ll have a video demo featuring Grace Chen posted soon on the Blog.

Update v5.00 adds a sleep timer option that can be used while you are playing music on your PSP. In addition, we’ve added a full screen keyboard option for text entry and have redesigned the background of the XMB.

A sleeper timer? Interesting.

The PSN connectivity has been something that I’ve wanted ever since the store got released so this should make things like downloading trailers a whole lot easier (because as of the moment, you need to connect your PSP to your PC in order to download from PSN)

On the full screen keyboard.. well I’m not really sure what to make of it since very few games really need text input but it’s no doubt useful for Hombrew-ers who have the notepad app loaded.

The Firmware is set to be released this october but so far, there’s no update even on the official PSP update site.

Update: PSP 5.00 M33 has been released

You have to see it to believe it. It’s better now than the older system. Kasi ung dati parang rip ng sa cellphone.

I upgraded this morning and I have to say accessing the Playstation store from the PSP is great!

I downloaded a few wallpapers from the site and some game trailers.

Yep. Too bad the PS Store uses CC’s instead of paypal. If they didn’t I’d have splurged on several games by now. XD
