Apple: 3rd party software = no warranty

After rumors of Apple bricking unlocked Iphones with the new firmware, the company just announced that running and third-party application on those $400 gadgets would effectively void warranty. The company also states that the reason behind the canceling is that 3rd party software causes irreparable damage to the iPhone’s system. How? Apple did not specify how it would affect the phone’s performance nor listed specific names that would be considered as 3rd party software. I guess it’s a hit or miss thing.

If you’ve just bought an iPhone or are contemplating on buying one, consider it a warning. In a few months, maybe weeks, Nokia and other cellphone companies will release their products to battle the iPhone and it’s probably best to hold out until those unless you’re a rapid Apple/iPhone fan. For everyone else in the modding community, to hell with warranty. If you’re lucky enough, you won’t be needing it.

CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone’s warranty.
