Nintendo overhauls loyalty program, sends out free Wii and 3DS games

Looks like Nintendo is playing Santa to Club Nintendo members, sending out free games for the Wii and 3DS.

For registered Wii owners, you’ll get:

Super Mario Kart
Fluidity

For registered 3DS owners, you’ll get:

3D Classic: Xevious
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again

The catch? You’ll have to buy them by using the Nintendo Coins. So not exactly free but since Nintendo gives you several ways to earn these coins without shelling out cash, they’re still technically free.

As with the Ambassador program, Nintendo is only putting these games up for free for a limited time — up until January 10, 2012. If you miss that date, you’ll have to make do with the new ones that the company will put up for download.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 is headed for the US sometime in early 2012 and Atlus has generously shared the official box art and some screenshots from the localized version of the game.

If you’re looking to play the first game, you may want to look at the enhanced 3DS port Shin Megami Tensei:Devil Survivor Overclocked (order here) or the original Shin Megami Tensei:Devil Survivor (order here) for the Nintendo DS.

Limited Edition Flame Red 3DS up for Black Friday sale

If the Limited Edition Zelda 3DS that’s going up for the Black Friday Sale isn’t your thing, how about a Flame Red 3DS complete with Super Mario 3D Land bundle?

Nintendo of America has just announced the Mario 3D Land bundle which will hit major retailers for the upcoming Black Friday Sale.

This bundle includes a Flame Red 3DS and the much celebrated 3DS Mario-game, Mario 3D Land. Like the Zelda 3DS bundle, this will be available for just $199 in limited quantities.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS set for Black Friday sale

Looks like someone at GameStop has heard the pleas of every Zelda fan in the U.S. and has added an amazing deal just for Black Friday.

The Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo 3DS bundle will be available at GameStop for $199. If you have a working DSi/DSi XL/DS Lite, you can also take advantage of GameStop’s trade-in offer and drop the price even further.

Now the problem for me is how to get one

Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo 3DS headed for Europe

Europe will be the first (hopefully not the only) recipient of the limited edition Zelda: Ocarina of Time bundle.

The Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo 3DS bundle includes a copy of the game, a gold-coloured sleeve double-sided sleeve and the Zelda accented Nintendo 3DS console.

The bundle will be available on November 25, exclusively in Europe :/. As of press time, no price has been set for the bundle.

A bit of warning, if you plan to import the EU Ocarina of Time 3DS, be sure to note that it will only play titles for the EU region (thanks to the region lock).

Upcoming 3DS firmware adds 3D video

The Nintendo 3DS dual camera’s capabilities are going to receive a upgrade with the upcoming firmware update.

According to the announcement made by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the 3DS will get the following new features:

3D video recording of upto 10 minutes for each clip.
Stitch photos together for a stop-motion animation short.
A map overlay to show where Miis you’ve collected in StreetPass are from.
3DS to 3DS transfer.
A sequel the 3DS RPG Find Mii.

US 3DS owners will receive a bonus for updating their console in the form of Hulu Plus, allowing you to access the streaming service’s vast archives of TV shows and movies.

New Love Plus gets Limited Edition Nintendo 3DS

Aside from the recent Nintendo 3DS price drop, it looks like there’s going to be one more reason for Love Plus fans to get a 3DS. Ok, maybe three reasons but only if you want all 3 girls.

To celebrate (and undoubtably spur sales) Konami has announced that there will be three limited edition New Love Plus Nintendo 3DS named New Manaka Deluxe, New Rinko Deluxe, and New Nene Deluxe, one for each girl in the new Love Plus game.

The New Love Plus will surely land in a collector’s pocket as Konami says that while they will be available online through Konami Style on their official website, customers will have to join the raffle to avail of one.

If you already have a 3DS and don’t want to pick-up a custom skinned unit, you can opt for the limited edition bundle of the game that includes with an art book instead. No word if the artbook will also be available on the console bundle but in the case that it isn’t, I would recommend getting the bundle with the book instead. You can always apply a GMask for your console afterwards but you can’t get the artbook (save for the internet of course) elsewhere.

PSA: Deadline for 3DS registration for Ambassador Program

If you have bought a 3DS recently (at full price and not the new $169.99 tag), don’t forget that today is the last day of registration for the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program.

If you’re looking to register at the last minute, remember that the deadline is August 11, 2011 at 11:59 p.m E.T.

Some shops have already dropped prices for the 3DS way ahead of August 12 schedule for the mandated discount so if you can get one at the new price and register before the time is up, you’re getting a sweet deal (3DS at $169.99 and 20 free 3DS games? It’s a bargain).

As for the list of free 3DS games that you’ll be getting, here’s a list of what Nintendo has confirmed so far:

Flame Red Nintendo 3DS coming in September

The previously Japan only variant of the Nintendo 3DS is making it’s way to the US next month.

Nintendo has just announced that the Flame Red 3DS (note the different naming, it’s Flare Red for the Japanese one) will go on sale September 9, timed alongside the release of US version of Star Fox 64 3D.

The Flame Red Nintendo 3DS variant will carry the new, lower price tag of the whole console line and will be available for just $169.99.

Nintendo drops 3DS price, gives free games

Being an early adopter is sometimes like shooting yourself in the foot. Those who bought the 3DS early could be feeling the pinch right about… now.

Just a few months into the release of the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo has announced a price drop for it’s latest portable console from $249.99 to $169.99 (in Japan, that will be ¥15,000 from ¥25,000).

The reason for the price cut? Nintendo officials says that it’s meant to speed up the spread of the 3DS as the year end rush approaches– and with good reason. To date, Nintendo has only sold 0.71 million 3DS units from it’s launch date in March up to June 30, 2011 with 4.53 million 3DS software titles sold. In comparison, the aging DS lite sold 1.44 million units in the same period, along with 12.13 million pieces of DS software. Of course the 3DS’ disappointing software sales could be attributed to the lackluster launch game line-up.

Still, the new pricing will no doubt spark interest in the console once more. The new pricing will take effect in August 12 (August 11 for Japan).

For early adopters (who are no doubt sore about the announcement), Nintendo has a special offer to make it up to you.

All you need to do is connect to the Nintendo eShop (which means you need to update your 3DS to the latest firmware available) at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11 to be automatically included in the the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. What’s in it for you? Free 3DS games of course

Here’s the complete details from Nintendo:

Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.
By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

Square Enix announces Limited Edition Heroes of Ruin 3DS

With several limited edition consoles under it’s belt to promote game releases (like the Dissidia PSP, Lightning Xbox 360, and many more), Square Enix announces a limited edition 3DS for it’s upcoming game Heroes of Ruin. As with many of their consoles releases, Limited Edition really means very limited quantities.

The Heroes of Ruin 3Ds ups the rarity ante of past themed consoles released by the company as it won’t be sold in stores. You can enter to win the Heroes of Ruin handheld by entering this contest run by Square Enix.

Heroes of Ruin and the Heroes of Ruin 3DS are slated for release early next year.

Capcom introduces One Save file per game DRM

While a lot of gamers love Capcom for their contributions to the gaming industry, they are slowly accumulating a lot of flak and angry customers from the company’s dalliance with DRM.

The story for today is that Capcom is looking to limit the re-sale of their 3DS game Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS. How exactly is Capcom employing this? By Mercenaries 3D a one-time play affair. This means that once you have unlocked all the everything and played the entire game, you will not be able to erase the game’s save data and start fresh. To be able to play again, you need to buy yourself a new copy of the game.

For those wondering if this is a bug, nope. It’s written in the manual as shown by the picture below:

Nintendo 3DS Tops one Million units sold

Mainichi reports that Nintendo’s 3D-touting portable has reached more than one million in domestic sales for the Nintendo 3DS. Worldwide sales of the Nintendo 3DS have reached 3.61 million units (as of April 2011).

Recalling the DS line’s successful history, this is rather disappointing considering that the original DS reached this mark on it’s first month in the market while the DS lite and DSi took eight weeks each. Of course that is if you don’t consider the DSi LL (or DSi XL for us English speaking folks) as a different system which took 25 weeks to reach the 1M milestone.

The slow sale of the 3DS can be attributed to the lackluster release line up, the Japan Quake and the price.

Now if the price of the 3DS is still too steep for you, you may want to take a look at the DS lite, it’s just $99.

Nintendo 3DS gets Flare Red variant

One of the many things that Nintendo has announced in E3 this year was a new color variant for the Nintendo 3DS: Flare Red, for Japan at least.

The Flare Red 3DS will be arriving July 14th alongside the Japanese release of Star Fox 64 3D. For more info on the Nintendo 3DS regarding specs and pricing, checkout this post.

For those of you waiting for a US/EU release, you’ll have to wait a bit.

Update: Well that didn’t take long. The Flame Red 3DS is headed for the US in September.
