Starcraft 2 release date delayed to 2010

Bad news for anyone looking for a Starcraft 2 purchase this Christmas season. After hinting that 2009 was the magical Starcraft 2 release date, Blizzard official confirmed that there won’t be a Starcraft 2 release for 2009. It’s set for the first half of 2010 but knowing Blizzard, they might as well release it on 2011, 2012 and so on…

And no, that’s not a bad thing either.

Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.

Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010.

We will share more details about the beta, Battle.net, and StarCraft II’s launch in the future. Keep an eye on the official website at http://www.starcraft2.com for updates, and as always, thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support for StarCraft II and all of Blizzard Entertainment’s games.

If you don’t want the gist of it, Stacraft 2 was delayed to further polish the BNet 2.0 experience by adding more features (I’m sure quite a lot of people will start screaming that they just need bnet to act as a lobby for games).

As for the No LAN policy? A bit of digging will tell you that LAN will still be incorporated in Starcraft 2 BUT before you can proceed to playing, you must connect to Battle.Net to authenticate your copy of the game. No other info seems to be available at this time but if you’re interested in reading Blizzard’s official statement, you can read up the Blizzard Q2 2009 Transcript.

A few reasons to BOYCOTT Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty!

    I. The development of StarCraft II was announced on May 19, 2007, at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Seoul, South Korea. Blizzard set a release date for the first public beta to summer 2009, but failed to make the release date. StarCraft II is being developed, under the codename Medusa, for concurrent release on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Blizzard has not yet announced a release date. Development on the game, initially delayed for a year by the temporary reassignment of Blizzard’s resources to World of Warcraft, began in 2003, shortly after Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne was released. According to Rob Pardo and Chris Sigaty, development for StarCraft II was put on hold for a year in 2005 due to the assistance needed for World of Warcraft.

II. Rob Pardo indicated in a June interview that LAN support would not be included in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Removing LAN has the effect of forcing players to connect through Blizzard’s servers, Battle.net, before playing multiplayer locally.

III. At the June 2008 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, Blizzard Executive Vice President Rob Pardo was quoted as saying that development of the campaign was one-third complete. He also said that Starcraft II is to be released as a trilogy of games, starting with Wings of Liberty, focused on the Terrans, followed by Heart of the Swarm, revolving around the Zerg, and finally Legacy of the Void, devoted to the Protoss. – Consider the fact that we still waiting over 6 years for the SC2: Wings of Liberty, this means that the other two will be released in 2022…

IV. The blizzard make fun of us!

THE CONCLUSION: Just fuck them be a MAN!
