Thanks to Davee and Team typhoon, custom firmware can now run on PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 with TA-088v3 via the chickHen hack. Using chickHen(or in this case ChickHen R2), you can run custom firmware to play ISO/CSO games and run homebrew applications.
So what is chickHen?
ChickHEN is an loader for all Sony PSP models (1000, 2000 and 3000) to run homebrew apps on official Sony 5.03 firmware. Everything runs on the onboard memory of the PSP so there’s no risk of damage (unless you stray away from the instructions). The current version of chickHen is chickHen-R2.
Update: This guide is sorely outdated.
Please refer to this new guide instead : Install Signed 5.03 Hen + 5.03 GEN-C on your PSP. It’s much simpler to follow and will help you install 5.03 GEN-C and the Prometheus-4 module.
Important: If you have official firmware 5.50 installed, stop now. You can’t install the chickHen hack which means you can’t install any of the custom firmware for your PSP (5.03 GEN-A or Custom Firmware Enabler). As of 5.50 OFW, the TIFF exploit that the chickHen hack runs on is already patched.
Requirements:
- A PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 with TA-088v3 motherboard.
- A firmware version of 5.03 or lower. If you have anything higher, you can’t install chickHen.
- Download: 503.pbp | 503.pbp
- Download: ChickHEN R2 | ChickHEN R2
Update your PSP to OFW 5.03
Skip this step if you already have official firmware 5.03 installed.
- Connect your PSP to the computer in USB Mode
- Copy the 503.pbp to folder PSP/GAME/UPDATE
- Disconnect the PSP from USB
- Run the Update via XMB
- When the update finishes proceed to installing chickHen R2.
How to Install chickHEN R2 on your PSP
- On the Settings menu of your PSP’s XMB, do the following
- Restore to Default Settings’ of PSP
- Turn off UMD Auto-Start and UMD Cache
- Character set to us
- Revert theme for classic
- Connect your PSP to the computer in USB Mode
- Unzip ChickHEN R2.zip on your computer
- Copy h.bin to your memory stick root, this is where the VIDEO, PICTURE and PSP folders are.
- Copy the chickHEN folder (use the contents PHAT folder for PSP-1000s, SLIM folder for PSP-2000s and PSP-3000s) inside the PHOTO folder of your PSP (X:/PSP/PHOTO is the root of the memory stick, manually create this if you don’t see one)
- Disconnect the PSP from USB.
- Turn OFF (not standby) your PSP and turn it on again.
- Go to XMB >> Photo >> Memory Stick and wait (YES YOU NEED TO WAIT) an Options menu appear (Right Bottom)
- Hit X to open ChickHEN folder
- If you’re successful ChickHEN-R2 load up, you’ll see flashing colors, and your PSP will reboot automatically into ChickHEN. Check your Firmware version and you should see :

For you lazy bums out there, you can use these programs to install chickHen R2 will just one click.
- Download the installer for your PSP Model:
- Download for Phat (PSP-1000): HEN for PHAT
- Download for Slim/Brite (PSP-2000/-3000): HEN for SLIM/Brite
- Extract the zip file to your computer
- Run the included program (it’s an exe, but don’t worry, it’s virus free)
- Connect your PSP to your PC.
- Hit the install button.
- If you’re successful ChickHEN-R2 load up, you’ll see flashing colors, and your PSP will reboot automatically into ChickHEN. Check your Firmware version and you should see :

After successfully loading chickHen, you can now proceed to run custom firmware on your PSP. You can choose:
Troubleshooting
If you’re experiencing trouble (and yes, a lot of people are having trouble running ChickHen) try these:
- Go to system settings, and choose Restore Default Settings option. Don’t change your PSP’s name from default.
- Turn off the Umd Auto load
- If you have PSP-2000 or PSP-3000 turn off UMD cache.
- Change the character set code to the US (437) or Multilingual latin 1 (850), this code are used for system access of some file types.
- Adding 1 to 2 extra gif images, copy and paste with name e.g. ChickHENe.gif, ChickHENf.gif. Its most happen on High Speed memory stick pro duo. Fake MS or Not
- Don’t use the chickHen folder other than for pictures used for chickHen.
- Try to use a different memory stick or reformatting your memory stick (after backing up it’s contents).

Hi, I installed ChickHen (the first version), not knowing that there is a difference (R2). Is there a way to upgrade from R1 to R2? or perhaps returning from R1 to Firmware 5.03 so that i can install R2.
R2 has more features and is more stable than R1.

i had problem installing chickhen r2. psp allways freezes and turns off when i enter chickhen folder in photo.
and it happenned because i did not connect psp to power supply

OMIGOD, I had the same problem, chickhen can never install itself until I reverted everything back to its default value, I mean everything, theme, time zone etc, and when I went to the chickhen thingie, it worked like a charm!
You Need to get rid of all those extras things you added to make it work!

I currently have TA-088v3 – equipped PSP-2000. Urmm, i was curious and decided to update my firmware to gen 5.50 A. Sadly, i can’t play the cso/iso games which i could play before. Should i download the chickhen R2? I’m just afraid my psp is bricked now. I will appreciate any advice to this matter. Thank you.

It’s not bricked. You have however, installed the official 5.50 firmware which effectively removes the capability to play ISOs. There is no way currently to downgrade TA-088v3 equipped PSPs.
I see. Hmmm, i heard about the pandora battery and magic ms, which can ‘solve the problem’. You guys think it’s credible ? If in the case i can’t do anything to downgrade, then i have to wait for a suitable programme, is it ? Aha sheeshh.
Pandora works only on hackable PSPs (Phats and Slims that don’t have TA-088v3). And yes, you have to wait until someone finds a way to help you downgrade.

Hi all, wondered if someone could help a guy out here. I’ve read through the guide and it all makes sense, I downloaded 503.pbp to update my psp which is currently firmware 3.03 OC, and put it in the right path, but then when I come to update via the XMB it just shows corrupted data?
Am I doing something wrong or do I need to change my firmware into something else first? My PSP is a 1000 model by the way. Thanks in advance.
You’re upgrading from 3.03 OC.. 5.03 requires a version of at least 3.52.
Tell you what since you’re on a phat here’s what you do.
Download and install:
3.52 then
5.00
Once you’re on 5.00 OFW, proceed to follow this guide to installing custom firmware without pandora
If you’re having problems upgrading from 3.52 to 5.00 I suggest upgrading to something closer like 3.90
Thanks for the reply. I think I’m placing the file in the wrong path or something since I tried the same thing with 352.php and I got the same error of corrupted data.
My path for it is as described PSP/GAME/UPDATE, but I created the UPDATE folder myself within GAME since it wasn’t there by default. I checked up on the model and its definitely a 1000/phat model. Is it my current firmware thats causing this problem?
Nevermind there, I figured that you have to rename the files to EBOOT to make them run. However, now it comes up with game cannot be started error DADADADA. Any thoughts?
Firmware files need to be in a specified naming convention or else they won’t work (ie. 5.00 needs to be 500.pbp). As for the directory, they really need to be X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/version.pbp

first of all I must apologize as this is my first post and I am already seeking help, but given my situation and exhausting all the possible ways I could… I need your guys help. I already posted this elsewhere and some of you probably are from those other forum boards so you might be seeing this for the second time but for the sake of getting a response by posting to a bigger audience I am posting it here as well. Now I am not an idiot when it comes to these things and I find this an extremely weird case, so here goes.
Problem: I can’t upgrade firmware past 3.71 M33-4
**I CAN DOWNGRADE even down to 1.50 JUST NOT ANYTHING PAST 3.71 M33-4!**
PSP Specs:
Motherboard: TA-079
PSP Model: 1001 aka a FAT PSP
Battery: Sony 3.6v 1800 mAh Battery Pack
Memory Stick: Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo 4GB
I have tried (for many different firmware versions past 3.71):
putting the M33/OFW in PSP/Game/UPDATE folder and running it in XMB
Despertar del Cementerio (v3 — 3.71 installer doesn’t even seem to work?)
Hellcats Recovery Flasher (downgrades to 1.50 good but upgrades brick)
ChickHen
flashing by IPL’s (by MMS’s)
and probably some other ways as well but I can’t remember them all right now

The FULL story:
The problem as mentioned in the thread title is I can not seem to update my firmware past 3.71 M33 (more accurately 3.71 M33-4). I get to the Update was successful press X to restart and when I press X it restarts the green light comes on but with the black screen and couple seconds later green light turns off (becomes bricked). This always ends up happening… I have tried different firmwares 3.80, 3.90, 4.01, 5.00, and OFFICIAL firmwares as well past 3.71 but it still does not work. The methods I have used have been putting the M33/OFW in the UPDATE folder and running it, tried Despertar del Cementerio, Hellcats Recovery Flasher, ChickHen, IPL's (by MMS's) and probably some other ways as well but I can't remember them all right now. The MANY times my PSP has bricked trying to upgrade my firmware I tried different IPL's from Magic Memory Stick Creators and only 1 really works on my PSP. I have tried PSP Pandora Deluxe, Rains Ultra Lite MMS, PSP Grader, Catb50 Ultimate Magic Memory Stick Creator and none of those worked (except I got Catb50's to show the IPL screen except I could not for the life of me get past it — I was trying the 3.80 option maybe would have worked with the 3.71 option). What did work was Xi-Bits NewbiInstaller (which installs 3.71). That is what I've been using to unbrick it since nothing else is even unbricking it anyway. My battery (Sony 3.6v 1800 mAh Battery Pack) I have heard mixed reviews about being able to turn into a Pandora Battery but I've been able to successfully use it to unbrick my PSP along with my Magic Memory Stick.
So here I am community, hopefully somewhere here can help me as I am clueless as to why my PSP can not seem to handle going past 3.71 M33-4, I've googled and noone else seems to have this problem and I've spent much, much time trying different combinations and options. Seems so very odd and random…
The only thing I can add to this original thread today is I have found a post from someone with a similar problem from lan.st. No answers were posted or if his was even fixed but cory1492 and jas0nuk threw in their 2 cents which I'll show below.
Hmm.. have you thought about upgrading to 5.03, running chickhen then using Hellcat’s Recovery tool to install 5.00 M33-6?

if i use chickhen to put cfw on a phat will i be able to flash it some how? so that it won’t dissappear when turned off? also my slim keeps freezing and then turning off when loading a game or application, I have 5.03 m33-6 with a 2GB and a 4GB mem stick that i switch out regularly. when i said turned off i mean all the way. so i have to reload the cfw. please let me know your thoughts on everything. I’d like to know if I turn off or hard reset my PSP-3000 I’ll have to follow ALL the procedures of ChickHEN again, or only the loading of .tiff files on “PHOTO”?
And another question: after applies the ChickenHEN once, there’s a way to return to original factory state of the FW? (5.03, on my case)

Hi, I’ve followed all the steps but nothing seems to happen. My slim psp remains stuck at 5.03 ofw. I’ve put the h into the root folder, the chickhen slim folder into the photo folder, restarted the psp, gone to photos and opened the folder, and nothing happens. it just shows a slideshow of the pictures. what could have caused this and thanks for the help in advance
Try the easy installer. It seems to work better for most.

-both umd auto start and umd cache off
-character set for us
-change theme for classic
Restart your psp put game in to slot wait to psp start reading disc go to phot wait to see first picture and slowly very slowly go to bottom . I give you my word this gone help you

I’m having some problems installing ChickHEN R2. When I go to the ChickHEN folder, my PSP 2004 just freezes and shuts down. But when I tried installing ChickHEN R1, it immediatly worked. Does ChickHEN R1 have more chance on succesfully installing or am I doing something wrong with R2?
First, some advice to anyone (particularly PSP 1000 users it seems) suffering from the corrupted data issue with the 503.pbp – Renaming this EBOOT.PBP does seem to be the answer.
I had a query about the troubleshooting advice on adding .gif images – Are they in fact supposed to be .gif and not .tiff?
There’s a reason why it’s the exploit that chickhen is running on is the TIFF hack.

I tried to install through Easy installer for ChickHen R2… well nothing happens.
Then I used the other method:
Copy the 503.pbp to folder PSP/GAME/UPDATE
But it shows corrupt data.
Well now how to go about it?

Don’t use Pandora Battery.
You put must your ChickHEN homebrew on your PSP properly…

Then if you are using USB Mode on your PSP, you must Cancel after copying a file.
*I’m using a card reader for fast and easy copying file*
After you Cancel the USB Mode:
1. You must turn on the WLAN above your PSP. (This is better than using a UMD demos.)
2. Open your PSP power.
3. Go to Photos.
4. Find the ChickHEN folder.
5. Finally, if your PSP restart, go to GAME Folder and open the INSTALLER of your PSP.
*Note: Don’t downgrade or upgrade your PSP if you are using PSP 3xxx or your PSP will be broken. (I’m using PSP 3xxx 5.03 without downgrade or upgrade. I simply download a ChickHEN Homebrew.)

If not restarted, go to Step 2.

Dont worry about changing System Information if there is a ChickHEN R2, MHUD, or Gen-A (Full).
But you can play ISOs and CSOs
if your psp gonna work, tell me…
all .pbp files must put in:
root >> PSP >> GAME >> (folder with .pbp’s)
all games must put in ISO…
by using CFWEnabler 3.60, you can change the version of your psp 3000 v.5.03 – v.5.51…
don’t worry, your psp can’t brick…

hi. leah here… i installed the CFWEnabler 360 because I read here that it would help speed up my psp…
(it has slowed down since the hack).
Question.. Is there an option or sumthin that I have to adjust now that I have the 360 installed? It’s still slow…

The first time i used that Gen-A (Full), my game slows… But when i used the CFWEnabler 3.60, my psp normalized…
after you install the CFWEnabler 3.60, go to that game… and set the speed of your psp
set it all into Default to normalize the speed….

If you have a completely hackable PSP yes, you can use a Pandora battery to downgrade, otherwise nope.
