It’s here. After Sony Drive teaser, Sony presents us with a 3-mm thin, 1,000,000:1 OLED TV, to be released on the 1st of December in the Japanese market. This brand spanking new (and expensive) toy sports an 11-inch screen with a 960 x 540 pixel resolution, digital tuner, 2x 1W speaker, and HDMI, USB, and Ethernet jacks for connectivity, all packed into a slim package measuring 287 x 140 x 253-mm and weighing just around 2-kg.
The catch? It’s $160 per inch or about $1,740.
Toys of the Big Boys as they say, but isn’t price irrelevant to first-adapters? *cough*first Iphone buyers*cough*

To those who have no idea what an OLED is aside from (referring to the pic) an Ultra Sleek display, envision thin, lightweight displays that are bright and easy to read, that consume less power, that are flexible and, when turned off, even transparent. Or, think about a bright-white light panel that can replace today?s bulky and fragile incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes. OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode which is any light-emitting diode (LED) that has an emissive electroluminescent layer comprises a film of organic compounds, basically their brighter, more efficient LEDs.
What that. OLEDs features:
- Vibrant colors
- High contrast
- Excellent grayscale
- Full-motion video
- Wide viewing angles from all directions
- A wide range of pixel sizes
- Low power consumption
- Low operating voltages
- Wide operating temperature range
- Long operating lifetime
- A thin and lightweight form factor
- Cost-effective manufacturability
The catch? OLEDs last a lot less than LCDs or Plasma displays which each are currently rated for about 60,000 hours, depending on manufacturer and model. OLEDs have been estimated to have about 10,000 hours or less.
Is it worth it? Well if you have the money why not? More bragging rights for you for just owning one.
